ARTIST PROFILE
A professional sculptor based in Auckland who works primarily in cast glass and recycled copper, but also delves into other medias. Brian has produced a number of exciting works in wood, both carved and turned. He is also a keen photographer.
His most recent works in both glass and copper could loosely be described as Realist. Many exhibit a strong bias for natural forms and contours, and show clearly the influence of a careful and loving study of New Zealand’s native plants, wildlife and terrain. However some of his works can be considered to be provocative statements and observations of history.
Brian’s cast glass sculptures offer a fresh and distinctly New Zealand take on the interface of light and form. His works are primarily biomorphic – the curvature and colours combine strength and warmth.
Indulging creative interests is costly in time, efforts and there are disappointments but retirement after 30 years of full time work allows Brian the opportunity to let loose his creative drive. It provides him with a lot of personal satisfaction but also it gives him great joy to see his creations in copper and cast glass being appreciated by others.
